Introduction to Robotics: Mechanics and Control (3rd Edition)
Customer Reviews — [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2008-03-11 Summary: Great first book ... This was my favorite because it was easy to follow and understand basic robotics. Though some of the material is outdated, it still gives you a lot of insight into basic manipulator mathematics. But set your expectations right-you should not expect this book to teach you basic mathematics of rotational matrices. ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2007-07-03 Summary: Robotics Instructor - Oklahoma ... I teach a introductory course in robotics that is targeted for the senior/graduate level student in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering /Computer Science. The goal is to understand the kinematics, dynamics and ultimately the control of robotic manipulators. Unequivocally, this is one of the best books in introductory robotics! This book is not for the robotic tinkerer or the amateur, but for the engineer who is desirous of obtaining a sound understanding of the principles involved. In the past four years that I have ...more
Editorial Reviews — ... Product Description | Now in its third edition, Introduction to Robotics by John J. Craig provides readers with real-world practicality with underlying theory presented. With one half of the material from traditional mechanical engineering material, one fourth control theoretical material, and one fourth computer science, the book covers rigid-body transformations, forward and inverse positional kinematics, velocities and Jacobians of linkages, dynamics, linear control, non-linear control, force control methodologies,...more

Professional Microsoft Robotics Developer Studio (Wrox Programmer to Programmer)
Customer Reviews — [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2008-10-26 Summary: Thorough but not easy material to get through ... I have not yet completed reading this book though I have read the first few chapters. My first impression is that although this book is fairly thorough and comprehensive, it's not the easiest material to get through. The authors start with the CCR (Concurrency and Coordination Run-Time) and discuss it in such a way that it has nothing to do with robotics. Obviously, it makes sense as to why you would have a specialized set of components to handle concurrency, etc., but it helps to know how it fits in the big picture ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-05-24 Summary: Table of Contents ... This is not an actual review of the book since I am still waiting for it to arrive. I wanted to post the Table of Contents here to help out others since I did not see one from Amazon... Foreword. Introduction. Part I: Robotics Developer Studio Fundamentals. Chapter 1: Exploring Microsoft Robotics Developer Studio. Chapter 2: Concurrency and Coordination Runtime (CCR). Chapter 3: Decentralized Software Services (DSS). Chapter 4: Advanced Service Concepts. Part II: Simulations. Chapter 5: The MRDS Visual Simulation Environment. ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-12-05 Summary: If you want deep knowledge, this is the book. ... This is not an intro book, but is the book you want if you want in depth knowledge. Very good book, but you'll likely use it as a reference rather than a tutorial as the topics are pretty targeted. ...more
Editorial Reviews — ... Product Description | Wrox's Professional Microsoft RoboticsĀ Developer Studio is one of the first guides to Microsoft's new platform for visualizing and programming robotics applications. Written by the founding architect of the product, Professional Microsoft Robotics Studio is heavy on examples making this a hands-on guide that will get readers building robotics applications quickly using 3 case-study robots: an indoor security robot, winning Magellan competitor and a chess-playing robotic arm. Topics include:...more

Probabilistic Robotics (Intelligent Robotics and Autonomous Agents)
Customer Reviews — [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2006-09-08 Summary: Robot Navigation ... Uncertainty is an important issue facing intelligent systems. Thrun, Burgard, and Fox have made important contributions to this area of research. Probabilistic Robotics is a more narrowly focused text than the title might suggest. At 650 pages perhaps it could not be broader and yet do justice to the topics the authors want to cover. Perhaps the title should have been Probabilistic Robot Navigation. My other criticism would be the lack of executables ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2007-09-18 Summary: Excellent resource for implementing SLAM ... This is by far the best resource that I have found for collating a large number of internally consistent SLAM algorithms into a single volume. The book carefully leads the reader through the requirements of SLAM presenting one algorithm at a time, building upon the algorithms presented previously. This approach lends itself very well to develop-while-you-read. If you care to do so, I recommend reading it through once in its entirety and then starting over for the develop-while-you-read approach. The once through does ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-04-05 Summary: Great Book! ... I consider this book the most valuable resource in the field! If you are really interested in implementing kalman filter localization, particle filter localization or SLAM algorithms, this book really will help you. This book was my reference during my Master Thesis and the algorithms are so comprenhensive that I hadn't any problem to put them running. I think the autors made a really good effort to explain complex mathematical concepts as clearly as possible. Great Job! ...more
Editorial Reviews — ... Product Description | Probabilistic robotics is a new and growing area in robotics, concerned with perception and control in the face of uncertainty. Building on the field of mathematical statistics, probabilistic robotics endows robots with a new level of robustness in real-world situations. This book introduces the reader to a wealth of techniques and algorithms in the field. All algorithms are based on a single overarching mathematical foundation. Each chapter provides example implementations in pseudo code,...more

Introduction to Robotics: Analysis, Systems, Applications
Editorial Reviews — ... Product Description | For one-semester, senior-level undergraduate/first-year graduate courses in Robotics. This text serves as an introduction to robotics analysis: the systems and sub-systems that constitute robots and robotic systems, and robotics applications. As such, it covers all the fundamentals, including kinematics, kinetics and force control, and trajectory planning of robots; it covers sub-systems such as actuators, sensors, and vision systems; and it covers robotics applications. Introduction to...more

LEGO Mindstorms NXT Power Programming: Robotics in C
Customer Reviews — [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-09-02 Summary: NXT Power Programming ... This is an excellent book written by someone who was involved in-depth with NXT programming as the NXT product evolved. Lots of good examples of C code will speed your learning curve. ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-02-21 Summary: Real programming power for the NXT ... If you are interested in programming your NXT beyond what NXT-G can do (the environment that comes with the retail kit) this is the book for you. You don't have to change out the firmware as you do for other text based programming languages, so you can continue to use NXT-G. In fact both types of programs can reside on the NXT at the same time. There is a great chapter giving details on the Bricx integrated development environment and all the tools that come with it. It is very complete. The versa bot that is detailed ...more
